What Are Twitter Communities?
In a bid to keep users engaged on the app, Twitter has been working hard to gain their trust, especially after the release of Meta’s new Twitter-like app, Threads.
Imagine having a private group where you can share content and interact with other members. That’s exactly what a Twitter Community is all about.
Understanding Twitter Communities
Twitter communities are exclusive spaces for sharing content, discussing specific topics, and connecting with other users on the network.

How Do Twitter Communities Function?
As mentioned earlier, a Twitter community is an exclusive space that comes with specific requirements for joining and sharing content.
One of these requirements is having a public account to create or participate in a community. However, Twitter is working on extending this function to private accounts as well.
Twitter communities are created and managed by users on Twitter. Admins and moderators are responsible for enforcing community rules and ensuring that content abides by Twitter’s terms of service.
If you still have doubts, don’t worry, we’re here to help. Let’s address some common questions:
▶️ How Can You Join a Community on Twitter?
Currently, Twitter offers two types of communities: open and closed membership.
In open communities, anyone with a Twitter account can join by tapping on ‘Join’ and accepting the rules. You can search for communities in the Twitter section on your browser using the magnifying glass icon.
You can also follow the Twitter Communities account to discover and join new communities.
In invite-only communities, you either need to be asked to join or request to join. Each user who joins a community gets five invitations to give out to others, which helps the community grow.
If you come across an invite-only community, click on ‘Agree and ask to join,’ and the moderator will receive a notification of your request.
When you join a community, you’ll see the Communities platform in the Twitter app or on the browser sidebar.
▶️ How Can You Tweet and Share Content?
If you’re overwhelmed by the number of profiles, don’t worry, you can tailor your tweets for your community or your followers.
Before posting, make sure you’re viewing the community’s feed. When you’re part of a community, you’ll have two options when tweeting: for everyone (reaching all users) or for a specific community (if you belong to multiple communities).
If you tweet into a community, your messages will appear in chronological order on members’ timelines.
▶️ Can You Leave a Community?
If you no longer wish to be part of a community, you can leave whenever you want. Simply go to the ‘Community’ page, tap on ‘Joined,’ and select ‘Leave the community.’
Unlike when you delete your Twitter account and all your tweets disappear, your content remains in the community even after you leave. If you decide to rejoin, you don’t need a new invitation. You can join again using your original invitation.
▶️ What are the Different Roles?
Like any other community, Twitter communities have administrators and moderators.
The administrator is the user who created the community and is responsible for everything related to the community initially. They can enlist the help of moderators to address any issues.
To be an admin of a Twitter community, you need to have a public account that is at least six months old, have a verified email address or phone number, and must not violate Twitter’s terms of service.
Moderators play a crucial role in ensuring all members have a great experience. Admins can add or remove moderators from the list of community members.
▶️ Can You Report Content on Communities?
Since Twitter communities are managed by admins and moderators, they can set their own rules. Each community must have a minimum of one rule and a maximum of 10.
Any user can report a community note by clicking on the “more” icon next to the tweet. Select “Report Tweet” and choose the option that states it violates the community rules. You can provide more specific details on how the tweet breaks the rules.
After reporting, you can choose to mute or block the account responsible for the tweet. You can report specific tweets or accounts following the same steps.
Twitter Community Features:
✅ Inviting and managing community members
✅ Enforcing community rules
✅ Hiding rule-breaking tweets from members
✅ Actively participating in the community through healthy debates or responding to tweets
The moderator should be someone you trust—a follower who has been with you from the beginning or someone you know personally. Ultimately, they are responsible for managing a community that represents your brand.
How to Create a Twitter Community
If you see the communities icon when you’re on Twitter, it means you meet the requirements to create one of your own.
To get started, tap on the icon, and Twitter will take you to the Communities page.
- Tap the ‘+’ button at the top right.
- Fill in the required information, such as the community name, purpose, and type of membership (open or members only).
- Tap ‘Create.’ You’ll then be taken to your community screen, where you can customize it with a cover picture, change the name or description, invite members, and set the rules.
From here, all you have to do is start tweeting within your community and watch it grow on Twitter.
