Twitter Communities: How to Join, Start, Become Moderator and More
Twitter is known for its unique approach to social media, bucking the trend of short videos and focusing on increasing interaction and community engagement. With features like Spaces and Twitter for Professionals, it’s clear that Twitter wants to provide users with more ways to connect. Recently, Twitter announced two new features: communities and NFT profile pictures. In this article, we’ll dive into the world of Twitter communities and explore how you can join, start your own community, and even become a moderator.
What are Twitter Communities?
Twitter Communities is a dedicated space where like-minded individuals can connect, share ideas, and engage in the discussions they care about most. Think of it as Facebook groups or Reddit forums, but on Twitter. Initially, communities were only available to a select few users during the testing phase. However, now everyone can access and be a part of Twitter Communities on iOS, Android, and the web.
Tweets within communities can be seen by anyone on Twitter, but only members of the specific community can engage and participate in the discussion. Communities are created and managed by people on Twitter, with admins and moderators setting the rules for each community.
Pro Tip: Update your Twitter app to the latest version to access the community tab, which will appear on the bottom bar once you’ve become a member of at least one community.
How to Join a Community?
There are two types of communities on Twitter: open communities and invite-only communities.
Open Communities
Open communities allow anyone to join without an invite. To join an open community, simply tap or click on the “Join” button located at the top of the community’s page, just below the community’s name. If you’re looking for open Twitter communities to join, we’ve curated a list for you.
Invite-only Communities
As the name suggests, invite-only communities require an invitation to join. To become a member of an invite-only community, you’ll need to be invited by a moderator or another member. Once you become a member, you’ll receive five invitations to invite others to join the community.
Did You Know? Currently, there’s no way to search for communities on Twitter. Hopefully, Twitter will add this feature in the near future.
How to Tweet Inside a Community and See Community Tweets?
Posting a tweet within a community is as simple as posting a regular tweet, with just one small tweak. Instead of sending your tweet to your followers’ home timelines, you can toggle the option at the top next to your profile picture to post your tweet within a specific community. Here are a few things to note about community tweets:
- Community tweets won’t be sent to your followers’ home timelines.
- All community tweets, including quote tweets, will be visible within the community and injected into members’ home timelines.
- Community tweets won’t appear on your Twitter profile.
To see community tweets, you can visit the communities tab, which will display tweets from all the communities you’re a part of. Alternatively, you can navigate directly to a community page to view a timeline specific to that community.
How to Leave a Community or Get Removed by a Moderator?
If you wish to leave a community, you can simply visit the community page and click the “Leave” button. In case you change your mind later, you can rejoin the community using the original invite code. Moderators have the authority to remove any member from a community for violating community rules or guidelines.
Why Am I Not Allowed to Join a Community?
If you’ve blocked a moderator, your account will not be allowed to join the community. If you’re already a member and you block a moderator, you’ll be removed from the community. This is to ensure that moderators can access all community tweets.
How to Become a Moderator and What Are the Roles?
Community administrators, or admins, are the owners of a community and have the authority to choose moderators. Admins are responsible for maintaining safe and meaningful conversations, reviewing member reports, hiding tweets, and removing disruptive members. Moderators, on the other hand, have the following roles within a community:
- Inviting and managing members
- Enforcing community rules
- Managing tweets
- Facilitating discussions
There’s no limit to the number of moderators in a community, and moderators can invite multiple members without any restrictions. To become an admin or a moderator, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Your Twitter account must be public (not protected).
- Your Twitter account must be at least six months old.
- Your Twitter account must have a verified email address or phone number.
- Your Twitter account must have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled at all times.
- Your Twitter account must not violate or have a history of violating Twitter’s Terms of Service.
Heads Up: If you violate any of Twitter’s policies, they reserve the right to take action against you, including pausing your participation as a moderator or removing you from communities.
How to Start Your Own Community?
If you’re interested in starting your own community, Twitter provides a form where you can express your desire to create a community. However, it’s important to note that currently, only Twitter can create communities instantly. So, fill out the form and let Twitter know what kind of community you’d like to have.
Wrapping Up
Twitter is continually working on improving the community experience. In addition to the features we’ve discussed, Twitter is exploring options such as a “request to join” feature, ranked timelines, content highlighting, and Q&A sessions with moderators and members.
