Have you ever received one of those notorious “I’m stuck in London” emails from a friend? Well, I recently experienced this firsthand when my friend Kate’s Gmail account got hacked. Unmasking the Scammer
The hacker eventually caught on to my intentions and abruptly ended the conversation. It became clear that these scammers are becoming more aware of how anti-scam techniques work.
Soon after, the real Kate called me back, and I directed her to a Google Help link that explains how to reset a hacked Gmail password. Google provides assistance for accessing hacked accounts for both Gmail and Google Apps.
It’s crucial to create a secondary email address for account recovery, especially if you haven’t done so already. Unfortunately, this feature is not available for Google Apps accounts at the moment.
Regaining Control
Kate followed the password reset process and reclaimed her Gmail account within minutes. However, the hacker had deleted all her emails, leaving her with nothing. There is a possibility that the criminal is sifting through those messages, searching for any valuable personal information.
I alerted Kate to another alarming discovery – the hacker was still able to copy her Yahoo email address, meaning they could still intercept every email sent to her Gmail account.
