How to Underline Text in Google Sheets
In this example we are going to demonstrate how to underline text in Google Sheets.
1. Double Click on the cell. Use the cursor to highlight the text
Double click on the cell containing text that you want to underline the value of. Use the cursor to highlight some or all of the text to underline . This will also work with numerical values.
In our example we will underline the text value “Third” located in row 7. For this we will highlight the entire text value (third).
2. In the Menu Bar, Click Format then Text and Underline
Go to the menu bar and click Format, then from the dropdown click Text and Underline.
3. The text is now underlined
The previously selected text has now been underlined.
In our example we can see the text “Third” in cell A7 is underlined.
The menu method will only highlight the entirety of the cell value
To highlight partial text or numerical values you must first select, drag and highlight how much of the value you want to highlight then use keyboard shortcuts:
- Windows press and hold Ctrl then press the U key
- Mac press and hold Cmd ⌘ and then the U key
How to Underline a Cell in Google Sheets
In this example we are going to demonstrate how to underline an entire cell in Google Sheets.
1. Click on the cell you want to underline
Select the cell you want to underline. For multiple cells click and hold down the left mouse button and drag the cursor to highlight as many cells as you need.
For this example we will underline the cell A5. We begin by clicking to highlight it.
2. In the Toolbar click the Borders option then bottom borders
Click the Borders option in the toolbar and then in the dropdown options select the Bottom border icon.
3. The cell is now underlined
The bottom border is applied and the cell is underlined.
In the example we can see that the cell A5 now displays an underline.
How to Double Underline in Google Sheets
In this example we are going to demonstrate how to double underline in Google Sheets.
1. Select the Cell to Double Underline
Click on the cell you want to double underline.
In the example we will apply double underline to cell C4 containing the text “double underline”.
2. Click the “Borders” option in the toolbar followed by the “Bottom border” icon.
From the toolbar click the Borders icon and from the drop down options click the Bottom border icon.
3. Click Border Styles and then Double Underline
Click on border styles, the last option in the dropdown will be double underline. Click this to apply the format.
4. The cell is now double underlined
The double underline has now been applied to the cell.
In our example we can see that the cell C4 has had the double underline applied.
